Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Lip Color - Review, Swatches, and Looks

Remember when Rimmel London came out with their Provocalips 16 Hour Kiss-Proof line?  I feel like it was one of the first liquid lipsticks to actually be transfer-free.  Then the matte liquid lipstick that we know and love hit the market, and everyone went nuts.

Well Rimmel London is back at it again, bringing you a wide range of new liquid lipsticks.

Bold matte lips in one swipe with up to 12 hours of wear.  Kiss-proof, water-proof, touch-proof.

This collection contains 14 liquid lipsticks that set to a matte finish.

They come in a twisted, triangular, translucent tube (talk about a tongue twister!), and have a black cap with the Rimmel London crown on the tip.

Each tube contains 0.21 fl oz. of product, compared to a Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, which contains 0.10 fl oz. of product.

The applicator is a flattened paddle applicator, similar to the NYX Lip Suede applicator.  The formula is a mousse-y formula, similar to the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, but they feel light on the lips, like the MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Liquid Mattes (Review HERE).

All of the lip swatches below have 2 coats of product.

First up is 'Pink Bliss', which is a nude punch pink, that has a bit of brightness to it.

'Blush' is a ballet slipper pink.

'Pink Blink' is a terracotta dusty pink.

'Rose & Shine' is a rosy lychee pink.

'Fire Starter' is a firetruck orange-red.  I found the formula to be a bit watery.

'Be My Baby' is a caramel beige.  Definitely my fave nude shade from the collection.

'Latte To Go' is an interesting one.  During application, the best way I could describe the shade was "Shawna's skintone".  Once it set, it leaned a bit more yellow/green.  This shade wasn't my cup of tea, but perhaps it was included in this collection as a way to brighten up the centre of the lips for an ombré look.

'Moca' is a light mocha brown, that is slightly less pink than 'Be My Baby'.

'Midnight' is a dark purple amethyst.  Like many dark vampy liquid lipsticks, this shade had a thin and patchy formula, which made for a difficult application - it took a thick application to get even coverage.

'Plum This Show' is a ripe raspberry plum.  unfortunately, the formula had the same issues as 'Midnight'.

'Heartbeat' is a purple-toned fuchsia, that has a smooth formula.  It's my top pick from the collection, because it reminds me of my fave lipstick, Tarte's 'Surfer Girl'.

'Blue Iris' is a midnight blue.  The formula felt noticeably dryer than the other shades in this collection.

'Pitch Black' is black that leaned a little jade green.  It took a bit of work to cover the patchiness - I wish it had better pigmentation.

'Shadow' is a wet cement grey.  Similar to 'Blue Iris' it felt more drying than the other shades, and I had to load on the product to get coverage.

I know it seems like I was kind of a harsh critic to these liquid lippies.  I was tough when it came to the pigmentation/formula, but fear not because they have a super redeeming quality.  They really don't budge!  I tested these out by going out for fried rice and dim sum, and of course, I expected the product to completely disappear from my lips, due to the oily food.  Wrong!  After 4 hours of munching and chatting, a thin but prominent layer of pigment was still on my lips!  Even when I couldn't feel the product on my bottom lip, and had assumed that it didn't survive the dumplings, it was still there!  Color me surprised!

UPDATE:  After a long 12 hour day that included lots of talking, as well as eating a burger and fries, the lipstick survived!  What is this sorcery?!?!

The formula is indeed transfer-proof (it took about 45 seconds to completely set).  Once the formula set, it seemed slightly sheer, but still managed to maintain a good color payoff.  When I applied it, it did not settle into my lip lines like most liquid lipsticks do - I imagine this is due to it being a moussier formula, that doesn't feel like a thick paint on the lips.

You can find the Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Lip Color for $5.79 USD exclusively at Ulta until June 30th, 2017.
